WiFi will not connect

What is the symptom of not connecting? When it did connect with the old router, what was the signal strength? Your new router may not be as strong a signal. Can the car see its SSID? Also, 2.4 vs 5 Ghz are very different. 5 Ghz is faster but weaker and more easily blocked by walls. If all is working but the car, you might consider a Wifi repeater somewhere between the router and the car, or if you have wired Ethernet and a jack nearer to where you park the car, you could get a Wireless Access Point, which would give you still stronger Wifi signal.

Yes. When you replace your home Wi-Fi router, your Tesla Model X may still be trying to connect to the old network. The good news is that you usually don’t need to reset the car or reinstall anything—you just need to connect it to the new Wi-Fi network.

Try these steps in order

1. Reconnect your Model X to the new Wi-Fi

  • Park your Tesla.
  • On the center touchscreen, open Controls → Wi-Fi (the exact menu may vary by software version).
  • Select your new Wi-Fi network.
  • Enter the new password and tap Connect.
2. Check your router settings

If your new network doesn’t appear, check that:

  • The router is broadcasting its Wi-Fi network name (SSID).
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is enabled. It’s a useful compatibility test for devices that have trouble connecting.
  • The network isn’t restricted by a guest-network setting, device limit, or access control.
3. Restart and retry

If the network is visible but won’t connect, restart your router first. Then, while parked, restart the Tesla touchscreen by holding both steering-wheel scroll buttons until the screen goes black and the Tesla logo appears. Wait for it to restart and try connecting again.

If it still won’t connect

Try connecting the car to your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot temporarily.

  • If the Tesla connects to your iPhone, the problem is likely a router setting.
  • If it cannot connect to the hotspot either, the issue may be with the car’s Wi-Fi connection or software.
What year is your Model X, and what brand of new router did you install?

For example, a 2022 Model X with an eero, Orbi, Google Nest, or Xfinity router may need different troubleshooting steps.
