test driving a used (2022) model Y

I am going to be test driving a used (2022) model Y at a local Toyota dealer. It is capable of FSD and I am wondering if I can subscribe during the extended test drive (3 days). I realize I will have to pay full amount, but just wondering if it is possible to subscribe anyway. If so, how do I go about it?

Also, will I be able to use superchargers, as I do not have an account setup.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to subscribe to Full Self-Driving (FSD) or use the Tesla Supercharger network during a 3-day test drive because the car is not linked to your personal Tesla account.

You cannot subscribe to FSD because the car is currently owned by the Toyota dealership. Tesla only allows the registered owner to purchase software upgrades.

You will need a Tesla account with a linked payment method to use a Supercharger. Since you don't have one set up and the car isn't linked to you, you won't be able to charge this way.

Your best option is to:
  1. Ask the Toyota dealer to fully charge the vehicle before your test drive.
  2. Inquire if they have any specific charging instructions or options available for you during the loan period.

Thanks! How can I make sure the vehicle is capable of FSD before purchasing it?

I will install Tesla app on my phone for charging.

Also, I do not have access to a level 2 charger, so can't test the battery condition using the built in test. According to Google AI, the vehicle should be able to drive between 180 - 220 miles with a full charge, and still have 20% remaining. Would this be an acceptable method to test the battery condition?

To confirm the 2022 Model Y is FSD-capable, check on the car's touchscreen, go to Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information to see if it has FSD computer (HW3 or higher) and an Autopilot package. Not all 2022 Model Ys have it, so it’s important to verify these features directly before purchase.

Your idea of testing the battery by driving it from fully charged to about 20% is actually a practical approach. For a 2022 Model Y, seeing 180 - 220 miles with 20% left lines up with what you should expect for normal battery health. It isn’t as precise as a deep diagnostic, but it’s a realistic test drive check.

You’ll only be able to use the Tesla app for charging if your account is temporarily added by the dealer. Otherwise, ask the dealer about charging options.

Here's a picture from the dealers web page. Looks like it is FSD ready to me.

I don't understand why I cant charge with my app. My nephew has a Chevy Bolt and uses Tesla chargers often.

You’re right! the image shows that this Model Y has the Full Self-Driving Computer (HW3), which means it’s fully FSD-ready. You’d just need to purchase the FSD software or subscription to use those features.

As for charging, Tesla chargers come in two types: Superchargers (Tesla high-speed network) and Destination/regular Level 2 chargers. Non-Tesla cars like the Chevy Bolt can use some Tesla Level 2 or “destination” chargers, but Tesla Superchargers are mostly reserved for Teslas and are linked to a Tesla account for payment. If the Model Y isn't connected to your account during the test drive, you can’t use Superchargers through your app, payment is tied to the car’s registered Tesla account afaik.

Bottom line: I think your nephew uses destination chargers, while for Supercharging, the Tesla app and account linkage are required for billing.
