Tesla winter driving guide: range, preconditioning and charging in the cold

Cold weather is here in much of the world, so here's how to get the most out of your Tesla this winter.

Before you drive
  • Precondition while plugged in. Warm the cabin and battery from the app before you leave, so the heating energy comes from the grid instead of your battery.
  • Use Scheduled Departure if you leave at the same time each day. The car will warm up and be ready.
  • Frozen door handles or charge port? Precondition first, and use the defrost option in the app to free them.

On the road
  • Expect lower range in freezing weather. That's normal for every EV.
  • Seat and steering wheel heaters use much less energy than heating the whole cabin. Use them and set the cabin a little cooler.
  • Regenerative braking may be limited when the battery is cold. You'll see a dotted line on the power meter.
  • Winter tyres make a big difference in snow and ice.

Charging
  • Navigate to the Supercharger in the car. It warms the battery on the way, so you charge faster when you arrive.
  • Leave the car plugged in overnight when it's well below freezing, if you can.
  • Charge soon after driving, while the battery is still warm.
